Healing Stories

MILES, A HEALING STORY
An IM School graduate writes about how Levent Bolukbasi helped her son, in utero

I was 23 weeks pregnant with my first child when I went for a routine comprehensive sonogram on the baby. The doctor called a few days later to tell me that there was some "fullness" around the baby's kidneys. I asked what she meant by "fullness" and she explained that there was urine having trouble getting through the kidneys and out of the system--there seemed to be some fluid backup in the kidney area. She went on to explain that it was still early in the fetus' development and more would be revealed as it grew and we would watch it closely, getting sonograms monthly.

I asked if there was anything I could do to help. If I ate differently or drink cranberry juice or more water, would anything help the process? She said that my kidneys were fine and that those things would not help the baby. She said that the baby was already on its own journey and there was nothing I could do. I kept replaying that last statement in my head. The more I thought about it the more I understood for myself that while the baby was on its own journey, that I could support his healing journey. I knew that I would speak with Levent about how I could support the baby.

I saw Levent a few weeks later at the IM School and explained the situation to him. He took a moment and explained that he was checking in with himself because he was not used to working in utero. He then asked me to sit down, I closed my eyes, took a few breaths and I immediately felt movement and a strong kick from the baby. I peeked my eyes open and saw Levent's hand hovering right over where the kick originated. Clearly, my baby and Levent were already communicating. I smiled, closed my eyes and witnessed this quiet discussion. The whole time, I felt tremendous movement from the baby. I felt some giggles come over me and then a wave of calm. Levent then tapped a few times on my upper chest and I opened my eyes. At the time, I was unsure what the taps on my chest had to do with the baby and its kidneys. Levent told me that the swelling was around the right kidney and that the left one seemed to be functioning properly. He said not to worry but to just concentrate on loving the baby. At that point I was somewhat suspicious of how he could determine something as specific as which kidney when they were still so tiny.

As I stood up and walked back into the classroom I smiled to myself, realizing immediately what the taps on my chest were for--I felt a lovely reprieve from the heartburn that plagued my pregnancy. I had never mentioned the heartburn to Levent.

The next time I went for the sonogram, the swelling around the baby's kidneys had decreased by a significant amount. I continued to go for sonograms as instructed by my doctor and the swelling amount began to fluctuate again and months later the doctor explained that now that the baby was larger they could see the kidneys clearer and that the swelling was actually only around one of the kidneys--the right one.

I humbly reported back to Levent and he did some more healing work on the baby. I had a similar experience with the baby immediately responding to Levent by giving a few strong kicks right to his hand and a strong swirling feeling, which I am convinced, was the baby dancing with Levent (something that Levent loves to do). I giggled and for the first time realized that this child already was making me laugh and would undoubtedly have a sense of humor. Levent told me that the problem would not be threatening to the child and that chances were good that the baby would work it out himself in his first year of life.

At the time of this writing, my son is five months old and happy as can be. His right kidney still has some swelling around it but the doctor says that the fluid volume is decreasing each time they do a ultrasound on it and that, indeed, the baby seems to be working it out on his own.

Just as a side note, when the baby was six weeks old, I took him to IM to meet Levent. Levent came over to him and touched his head and the baby smiled for the first time. It was amazing--I could not believe it. I had been waiting to see his first smile and it showed up here in this school where he spent so much time while in utero. I told Levent that it was his first smile, to which he replied, "We know each other."
